Display Name
The display name helps customers identify your business and sets the tone for communication, so it needs to align with platform guidelines and your actual business name.
Each display name should be associated with your business and must adhere to WhatsApp's Commerce and Business policies. Compliance with these guidelines is essential to send messages via the WhatsApp Business API and to qualify for official WhatsApp business accounts.
When a business reaches a high-quality messaging limit and successfully passes the Display Name Review while meeting the necessary criteria, the display name will automatically appear in chat.*
*Note: Meta is gradually rolling out this feature, and we have no information yet on when it will apply to businesses.
Before completing registration, you can change the display name as many times as you like. After registration, you need to wait 30 days between display name change requests.
Our principles for display names include:
Compliance with policies
A display name must comply with WhatsApp's Commerce and Business policies. For example, if you own a store that sells tea:
Accepted: XYZ Organic Tea Shop
Not Accepted: XYZ Herbal Supplements
This example demonstrates that the display name should clearly reflect the specific products sold while complying with WhatsApp's Commerce and Business policies.
Accurate Representation of Your Business
A display name should represent:
A business or one of its services, products, or departments.
A test or demo account, while still maintaining an association with the business (e.g., Fresh Produce Test).
A display name should not be:
An individual's full name.
A generic term (e.g., Fashion).
A generic geographic location (e.g., Chennai).
A slogan or long description.
If an organization is affiliated with the government, it needs approval from the WhatsApp team.
A display name must be at least 3 characters long.
Consistency with external branding
A display name should align with branding on external sources, like the company's website or marketing. An example for a product line named "Oceanview Resort & Spa":
Accepted: Oceanview Resort & Spa (consistent with branding on your marketing materials)
Not Accepted: Ocean Resort & Spa (shortened branding by removing "View")
Not Accepted: OV Resort & Spa (uses an inconsistent abbreviation)
A display name should use proper capitalization that aligns with your external branding. Avoid changing the spacing or adding extra punctuation, emojis, or symbols.
Clear Relationship with Your Business
A display name must clearly relate to your business and be mentioned on your website or external media references. For instance:
Accepted: Name of a charity mentioned on a non-profit organization's website
Not Accepted: Name of a charity not mentioned on any external websites
If the connection between your company and the brand isn't evident, clarify the relationship with "by [company name]."
Not Accepted: Fruit Snacks (Fresh Produce owns the Fruit Snacks brand but their association is not mentioned on any external websites)
Accepted: Fruit Snacks by Fresh Produce
If the display name represents a business associated with your company (e.g., agency, distributor, partner, or parent company), ensure that the relationship is clearly visible on both companies' websites. For example, if Global Voyager registers for WhatsApp and wants to use "Commercial Air" as a display name, they must provide links to both websites to confirm that Commercial Air is a subsidiary of Global Voyager.
Legal Entity in the Footer
If the official company name (legal entity) in the documents used for Business Verification differs from the one listed on the website, we recommend mentioning the legal entity on the website. For instance, include it in the footer like this: "Business ABC powered by Business CDE."
Active Website
A display name won't be approved without an active website. The website must be verified in your Facebook Business Manager. If your company’s website changes, the new one needs to be submitted for verification.
If you're having trouble getting a display name approved, reach out to our customer support team.
